Pulley: A grooved wheel guides a rope, as in a flagpole system. Inclined plane: A sloped surface spreads a lift over a longer distance. Wedge: Sloping surfaces separate or hold materials, as in a doorstop. Screw: An inclined plane wraps around a cylinder, as in a threaded fastener. The reminder at the bottom reads: Machines can change the size or direction of a force; they do not create energy.
