Buying guide

Choosing fonts and alphabet artwork

Match the file to your workflow. TTF and OTF are font formats used by compatible desktop systems and design apps. WOFF and WOFF2 are web font formats. Check the exact files supplied and whether your chosen app supports installing or uploading them; buying a font does not add that feature to an app.

Look through the character preview before choosing a font. Uppercase, lowercase, numbers, punctuation, accented letters and other writing systems vary by product. Swashes, alternate letters and ligatures may require OpenType-aware software. A decorative sample word is not proof that every character or style is included.

PNG or SVG alphabet packs contain letter artwork rather than a typeable font. Compare the included letters, backgrounds and sizes, and plan how you will arrange a name or phrase. PNG letters have fixed pixel dimensions; SVG letters can be scaled in compatible vector software. Neither format automatically supplies embroidery stitches.

Choose a license for how the lettering will be used, including client work, finished goods or embedding on a website. Do not assume a desktop font purchase includes web use or permission to distribute the source font. Check the listing’s terms and ask the shop about an intended use that is not clearly covered.

FAQ

Fonts and Alphabets questions, answered

What is the difference between a font and an alphabet set?

An installable font supplies characters you type in compatible software. An alphabet set usually contains separate letter images or vector shapes that you position yourself. Check the file formats and description; a PNG or SVG alphabet is not automatically a TTF or OTF font.

Should I choose TTF, OTF, WOFF or WOFF2?

Choose the format your software and license require. TTF and OTF are commonly used for desktop design work; WOFF and WOFF2 are intended for web fonts. A listing may include only some of these formats, and a web font file does not by itself grant permission to embed it.

Are numbers, accents and alternate letters included?

Only if the listing’s character set includes them. Review the full alphabet preview and language coverage, especially for names with accents. Alternate glyphs and ligatures can also depend on features supported by your design app.

Can I use these letters for machine embroidery?

An ordinary font or letter image is not a ready-to-stitch embroidery design. For machine stitching, choose a digitized alphabet in the Embroidery category and check the supplied stitch format and letter sizes. TTF or OTF support does not imply support for BX embroidery alphabets.

Can I sell designs made with a font or alphabet?

Check the listing’s license for your finished design, client project or product. Commercial use, print-on-demand and website embedding may have different terms. Buying a font or alphabet does not permit sharing or reselling its original files.
