Item details
Build comprehension one short text at a time. The "Environment and Earth Articles" pack for Grade 7 gives a seventh grader 8 original passages (6 articles, 1 fable and 1 how-to text) plus 40 questions that practice vocabulary in context, cause and effect and detail.
Inside you will find Forests That Walk on Water, The Hidden Reservoir Beneath Your Feet, When Corals Turn White, The Slow Making of Soil, Islands That Are Born and Die, How to Start a Backyard Compost Bin, Give the Bees a Home and The Heron and the Silver River.
Passage length is 248-265 words, averaging roughly 258. The type is Lora serif print for passages with Atkinson Hyperlegible for questions. Each of the 8 passages fills its own page, and its questions sit on the next page so the text never feels cramped.
Across the pack there are 40 questions: 32 multiple-choice items (four choices each) and 8 written-response items with lines for the answer. The skills covered are vocabulary in context, cause and effect, detail, inference, text structure, author's purpose, claim and evidence, main idea, character and theme.
A peek at the questions - "Islands That Are Born and Die" asks: Why does a chain of islands form instead of just one island? (answer D: The plate moves over a hotspot that stays in place). A written-response prompt from "The Hidden Reservoir Beneath Your Feet": What can happen when water is pumped from an aquifer faster than rain can refill it? Sample answer in the key: The water table falls, wells may need to be drilled deeper or may run dry, and in some places the ground can sink.
Everything arrives as one ZIP: an 18-page worksheet PDF in US Letter and in A4 (separate folders). The separate 3-page answer key gives the right letter plus its answer text, a model answer for every short-answer item, and labels each question with its skill. A cover page lists every title with its skills and page numbers, and a closing page holds a score tracker and a skills check for the student.
Use the tracker to see which skills need another round. Slip a passage into a sub plan or an early-finisher folder. Reuse the PDF as often as you like for your own children or classroom.
