Item details
Give a sixth grader a month of steady reading practice with this grade 6 set of 8 original passages from the "Realistic Fiction: Growing Up" theme. The pack mixes 8 stories, and every passage is followed by 5 comprehension questions.
Titles in the pack are Mia Takes the Net, A New Seat at Lunch, The Bean Plants That Wouldn't, Grandpa's Recipe Cards, The Borrowed Bike, The Group Project, Seventeen Seconds of Silence and Boxes in the Hallway.
Expect passages of 243 to 259 words, 251 on average, in Lora serif print for passages with Atkinson Hyperlegible for questions. Each of the 8 passages fills its own page, and its questions sit on the next page so the text never feels cramped.
The 40 questions split into 32 multiple choice (four bubbles per item) and 8 short answer. They target theme, cause and effect, character, detail, inference, vocabulary in context, tone and text structure, with theme questions appearing most often (8 times).
Here is one real item, from "The Group Project": Why did the group's progress stall? The right choice is B (Group members were assigned jobs they did not want without being asked); it practices cause and effect. Short-answer example, "The Group Project": What did each group member end up doing after Sam asked what they wanted to work on? The key gives this sample response: Nia drew the pictures of camels, Marisol designed the map, and Dev wrote paragraphs of text.
One ZIP download contains the 18-page PDF in both US Letter and A4 sizes. A 2-page answer key lists the correct letter and answer text for each multiple-choice item, a sample response for each written item, and the skill tag of every question. A cover page lists every title with its skills and page numbers, and a closing page holds a score tracker and a skills check for the student. An Editable folder with a DOCX file of all passages and questions is included too, without the answer key, so you can adapt wording or add your own items.
It suits homeschool language arts, literacy centers and homework folders. Slip a passage into a sub plan or an early-finisher folder. Reuse the PDF as often as you like for your own children or classroom.
Digital download only; nothing is mailed.
