Grade 5 Reading Comprehension Passages - Earth & Nature Articles (8) + Answer Key

Looking for ready-to-print reading practice for Grade 5? This "Earth and Nature Articles" pack bundles 8 short original texts, 1 story, 5 articles, 1 fable and 1 how-to text, each paired with 5 questions that check what the reader really understood.

Inside you will find How Volcanoes Build Islands, The Water Cycle's Long Journey, The Butterfly Journey, Coral Reefs: Cities Under the Sea, Why Leaves Change Color, Thunder on Marsh Lake, How the Owl Won Her Eyes and How to Start a Backyard Compost Bin.

Passage length is 210-226 words, averaging roughly 220. The type is Lora serif print for passages with Atkinson Hyperlegible for questions. Each of the 8 passages fills its own page, and its questions sit on the next page so the text never feels cramped.

Across the pack there are 40 questions: 32 multiple-choice items (four choices each) and 8 written-response items with lines for the answer. The skills covered are detail, cause and effect, inference, main idea, vocabulary in context, text structure, author's purpose, character and theme.

Here is one real item, from "How the Owl Won Her Eyes": Why did the moon give the owl large eyes? The right choice is B (The owl kept her company night after night.); it practices cause and effect. A written-response prompt from "The Butterfly Journey": Compare how long most summer monarchs live with how long the final generation lives. Sample answer in the key: Most summer monarchs live only two to six weeks, but the final generation lives up to eight months.

Everything arrives as one ZIP: an 18-page worksheet PDF in US Letter and in A4 (separate folders). An answer key (2 pages) sits in the same ZIP as its own PDF: correct letters with the answer words, sample written answers, and a skill label beside each number. Extra pages include a contents page up front and a progress tracker with a skills self-check at the back. Inside you also get a .docx copy of the passages and questions (no answers inside) that opens in DOCX editors for easy changes.

Use the tracker to see which skills need another round. Print only the pages you need and keep the rest for later. It suits homeschool language arts, literacy centers and homework folders.
