Item details
Build comprehension one short text at a time. The "Science and Technology Articles" pack for Grade 5 gives a fifth grader 8 original passages (1 story, 5 articles, 1 fable and 1 how-to text) plus 40 questions that practice detail, cause and effect and vocabulary in context.
Titles in the pack are How Bridges Stay Up, Why the Moon Changes Shape, Catching Sunshine: Inside a Solar Panel, The Heart: Your Hardworking Pump, How Airplanes Fly, How to Light a Bulb with a Simple Circuit, Omar's Thirsty Robot and The Clockmaker's Two Apprentices.
Texts run from 214 to 226 words (about 220 on average) and are set in Lora serif print for passages with Atkinson Hyperlegible for questions. Each of the 8 passages fills its own page, and its questions sit on the next page so the text never feels cramped.
Question types (40 total): 32 multiple choice with four options and 8 short answer. Skill focus: detail, cause and effect, vocabulary in context, inference, main idea, text structure, character and theme.
Here is one real item, from "Catching Sunshine: Inside a Solar Panel": What happens when sunlight strikes silicon in a solar cell? The right choice is B (Electrons can break loose and flow as an electric current.); it practices cause and effect. A written-response prompt from "How Airplanes Fly": In your own words, explain how a jet engine produces thrust. Sample answer in the key: The engine pulls in air, compresses it, burns fuel, and blasts hot gas out the back, which pushes the plane forward.
Your download is a single ZIP holding the 18-page worksheet PDF twice, sized for US Letter and for A4. A 2-page answer key lists the correct letter and answer text for each multiple-choice item, a sample response for each written item, and the skill tag of every question. Extra pages include a contents page up front and a progress tracker with a skills self-check at the back.
Use it for a weekly reading routine, one passage per day. Slip a passage into a sub plan or an early-finisher folder. It suits homeschool language arts, literacy centers and homework folders.
