Grade 4 Reading Comprehension Passages - Nature & Animals Articles (8) + Answer Key

Looking for ready-to-print reading practice for Grade 4? This "Nature and Animals Articles" pack bundles 8 short original texts, 1 story, 5 articles, 1 fable and 1 how-to text, each paired with 5 questions that check what the reader really understood.

The passages: The Octopus: Master of Disguise; The Long Flight of the Monarch; Life in a Tide Pool; How Penguins Stay Warm; Reading the Rings of a Tree; Noor and the Fox Kit; The Heron Who Wanted Every Pond; How to Make a Milk Carton Bird Feeder.

Passage length is 178-185 words, averaging roughly 181. The type is Atkinson Hyperlegible print, a typeface built for high legibility. Each of the 8 passages fills its own page, and its questions sit on the next page so the text never feels cramped.

Question types (40 total): 32 multiple choice with four options and 8 short answer. Skill focus: detail, cause and effect, inference, vocabulary in context, sequence, main idea, character, theme and author's purpose.

A peek at the questions - "Life in a Tide Pool" asks: In the passage, the word “exposed” means— (answer A: left without protection). Short-answer example, "The Octopus: Master of Disguise": What does an octopus do if it is spotted by a predator and its disguise does not work? The key gives this sample response: It squirts a cloud of dark ink into the water to hide itself and then swims away.

One ZIP download contains the 18-page PDF in both US Letter and A4 sizes. An answer key (2 pages) sits in the same ZIP as its own PDF: correct letters with the answer words, sample written answers, and a skill label beside each number. A cover page lists every title with its skills and page numbers, and a closing page holds a score tracker and a skills check for the student.

Print only the pages you need and keep the rest for later. Slip a passage into a sub plan or an early-finisher folder. Reuse the PDF as often as you like for your own children or classroom.

Print at home, at a copy shop, or view on a tablet.
