This Grade 1 pack collects 8 passages on the theme "Our World: History and Culture": 2 stories, 4 articles, 1 fable and 1 how-to text. All the text was written for this set, so the stories and articles will be new to your reader, and every one comes with 3 questions.
Titles in the pack are Light Long Ago and Now, A One-Room School, Mail Comes to Your Door, Trading Long Ago, How to Draw a Map of Your Room, Tomas at the Food Fair, The Street Party and Wren and Robin.
Texts run from 43 to 60 words (about 50 on average) and are set in large Andika print, a typeface designed for beginning readers. Each of the 8 passages gets its own page, with the questions printed below it on the same sheet.
Across the pack there are 24 questions: 16 multiple-choice items (four choices each) and 8 written-response items with lines for the answer. The skills covered are detail, main idea, cause and effect, inference and sequence.
A peek at the questions - "Tomas at the Food Fair" asks: How did Tomas feel about the new foods? (answer A: He liked them). Short-answer example, "Light Long Ago and Now": How is light today different from light long ago? The key gives this sample response: Light today is brighter and turns on at once with a switch.
