Item details
Fractions are easier to understand when they look like something you want to share, so every circle in this pack is drawn as a pumpkin pie with a crust and every bar as a slab of cornbread. Pies and bars are drawn in code with mathematically equal slices, so a fourth really is a quarter of the circle.
Children start by deciding whether parts are equal or not, then name the shaded fraction of pies and bars, color pies and bars to show a fraction, and circle the pie that matches a fraction. Later pages compare fractions with pictures, find the fraction of a set of pumpkins and apples, place fractions on a 0-to-1 number line, shade bars to find equivalent fractions, and solve five pie-shop word problems. Denominators are 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8, and the comparison answers are checked with exact fraction math in the build.
Great for: - Introducing unit fractions in grade 2 and grade 3 - A Thanksgiving-week math center with a pie theme - Visual practice for comparing and equivalent fractions - Extra practice for students who need pictures before symbols
