Six designs for the fall classroom. The first is the classic teacher gift: a shiny red apple with a green leaf sitting on a stack of three books (blue, green and purple) with cream page edges and gold spine bands. The other five are single, upright leaf specimens in solid thread colours: cranberry maple, chestnut oak, butter-yellow aspen, golden ginkgo and fern-green birch, each with a clear central vein and side veins.

Put the apple on a tote bag, a lanyard pouch, an end-of-term gift apron or a canvas book bag. Use the leaf shapes for a nature-walk patch, a science-teacher cardigan, a set of felt flashcards or a fall bulletin-board banner stitched in a row, and let children match the stitched leaf to the real one they have collected.

Leaves are drawn upright and unrotated, so they look like specimens, and every one is stitched as a single colour with a satin edge and a contrasting vein. Each design is also a separate file, so you can mix them freely on one project.

Compatibility: Compatible with home and commercial embroidery machines that accept DST, PES, PEC, JEF or VP3 files (Brother, Baby Lock, Janome, Pfaff, Husqvarna Viking, Tajima). Use your machine software or tools like Hatch, Embrilliance and Ink/Stitch for optional edits.

Stitching notes: Stitch on stable woven fabric or with cut-away stabilizer on knits; 40 wt polyester thread and a 75/11 needle suit these densities. Fills use tatami rows about 0.4 mm apart with edge-walk and zigzag underlay; satin edges give crisp outlines.
