A brimming orchard basket: a red apple, a green apple, a golden apple and a long-necked pear, all nestled in a woven wicker basket with a rolled rim and an arched handle. The basket is worked in caramel thread with a diagonal tan weave pattern that really does look like wicker once stitched.
It is made for the kitchen: put it on a flour-sack towel, an oven mitt, an apron pocket or a set of napkins, or give it as a stitched hoop to someone who loves apple-picking season. At the larger size the weave and the leaf veins become more pronounced, which suits wall hoops and pillow fronts.
Fruits are stitched back to front, and each one is trimmed to only its visible part so there is no thread piled up under the basket. Everything is edged with the same chocolate satin line, which keeps the colour changes down to nine.

Stitching notes: Stitch on stable woven fabric or with cut-away stabilizer on knits; 40 wt polyester thread and a 75/11 needle suit these densities. Fills use tatami rows about 0.4 mm apart with edge-walk and zigzag underlay; satin edges give crisp outlines.
